Godmanchester is a great place to live and to visit.
We've put together an online diary so that you can find out what's going on in and around our Town. You can search the diary to find similar types of events and activities or look up a particular day to find out what's on. All the entries are provided by event and group organisers so if you need more information or want to get in touch please contact them directly. And as this is a free diary, do let people who run activities know they can include their events on here.
Godmanchester is an historic and scenic Town situated on the River Great Ouse, in the Ouse Valley. There has been a settlement here since Viking times and the Town retains much of its Roman history: you can follow local history walks to see were the Town's temples, gatehouse and buildings once stood. Our Porch Museum is home to many local artefacts and you can find out more about the Town during that period.
Since being established as a Town 800 years, Godmanchester has grown to accommodate the changing needs of its residents and the local industry. Today its a vibrant Town with the feel of a village, home to around 6,000 residents and numerous businesses. Whilst you can still see much of the historic Town in its old buildings, its also has modern housing stock making it an attractive place to find a home. We're well connected to the mainline rail route, as well as the A14, A1 and M11, with Cambridge and Peterborough a short distance away. There are great pubs, tea rooms, takeaways and well-regarded restaurants to enjoy whilst you're here.
The river frontage really is a highlight for visitors and residents of Godmanchester. The Mill Lade by the Causeway was once a Viking Port; today its home to waterbirds and boats. Its here you will find the much photographed Chinese Bridge. There are pretty walks along the river and across the Country's largest water meadows of Portholme, which take in lovely views of some of our most imposing building including Old Farm Hall and Island Hall. The Nature Reserve in Cow Lane is an unspoilt and tranquil place to observe a wide range of wildlife, within easy access of the centre of the Town. And just beyond it lies the Ouse Valley Way, with its footpath and cycle route across the ancient West Common towards the Hemmingfords and St Ives.
We're a vibrant Town with a wide range of activities on offer to suit all ages and interests. Our Community Association organise numerous events throughout the year including our Gala Day, Picnic in The Park and Bonfire Night and New Year's Eve Fireworks. The Town Council runs a Christmas Market and Recreation Day. There are clubs and groups for all ages with more than 50 groups meeting regularly offering everything from sports and health activities, to arts, crafts and photography and further education. St Mary's Church, The Baptist Church and the Quakers regularly host activities for all ages. There are also a number of thriving social clubs and groups that meet in the Town.
Come visit and stay a while.
